With that being said, I love my job and have no plans to leave this organization at any point in the near future. I have never enjoyed a job as much as I do this one. The hours are great, the commute is super easy (basically non-existent), and I love the work I'm doing. I’m making a difference in the lives of individuals living with mental illness who are receiving services in the public mental health system across the entire state of Maryland. I conduct site visits to state psychiatric hospitals and psychiatric rehabilitation programs across the state for Maryland. Part of my time is spent speaking to the consumers of these programs and the remainder of my time is spent writing reports from each of the hospital units or psychiatric rehabilitation programs I visit. These reports are then sent to the Mental Hygiene Administration, a state agency in Maryland where much of our funding comes from. The interviews conducted with these individuals give them a voice that they wouldn't have had otherwise; an anonymous voice. Speaking with us is completely voluntary and names are only used when we are given permission to bring up an individual concern or when we hear of harm to themselves or others. We hear some really great things about the programs and we also hear things that could use improvement and individual needs that aren’t being met. We have been able to illicit change in various programs and have been able to advocate for individual needs to be met. We always be sure to give credit where credit is due. We love to hear positive things and we love to report those positive to the program and the state. Right now I am working on the annual report, a new and exciting project for me. I plan to stay at this job for a long time to come and hope to simultaneously kick start my writing career. I’ve got a neat idea for my own non-profit down the line which relates to professional writing. I hope to be able to sit down over the next few weeks and hash out some short and long term goals to work towards.
I just wanted to give a brief update on my current career and my future career goals. As I posted a couple of weeks ago, I have given up the Kissing Stigma Goodbye Facebook page to pursue my love for writing. I am using it only to share my blog posts after they have been written. The page has over 3,000 followers making it a great marketing avenue for my blog so I have set up automatic posts to the page when I post a blog. I am setting up a blog on Tumblr as well to gain more exposure. The web address for that blog is http://kissingstigmagoodbye.tumblr.com/. I will not be posting anything different there, just adding another avenue for people to read my blog. Right now, I’ve got a mostly finished piece that I hope to have completed and posted this evening or tomorrow. I’ve also got a few others topics that I plan to begin working on as soon as I am done with my portfolio. I love hearing everyone’s ideas on what topics you would like to see me write about. Please feel free to e-mail me at KissingStigmaGoodbye@gmail.com with any ideas you may have.
